Review: Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear This is a classy book written by an elegant woman who is as integrating as her protagonist. The book is a quintessential cozy, and deserved to win an Agatha Award for Best First Novel at the 2004 Malice Domestic Convention. It is non-violent, with memorable characters. Maisie is a strong young woman coming back after being a nurse in World War One. She is starting her career as a psychologically-based investigator. What begins as a “Is my wife cheating on me?' case becomes a confrontation with a cult, and Maisie's own confrontation with the trauma of the war and with her own broken heart. The author Jacqueline Winspear is a willowy blond with an English accent. I met her at Malice Domestic, and was immediately impressed by her dedication to her craft. She is in her own transition from her career as a life coach to becoming a full time writer. Back to list of reviews, poems and odd thoughts... |
